Coloring with black and other dark Copic Markers can be challenging. The darker markers (numbers ending in 6-9) have more dye in them than the lighter colors. Therefore, providing a much higher chance of "feathering" outside the lines or more "bleeding". It is also much harder to correct or "erase" our mistakes.
Here are a few tips to remember when coloring with dark colors.
Black: Use various shades of gray, so that you can have a highlight (#'s 1-2), Mid-tone (#3-5) and shading color (#7-9) This will give a black look with highlights and volume. Using grays will also allow the artists rendering to be seen through the colored areas. (lines from the rubber stamp image). Coloring in all black would hide the artists drawn lines).
Over Saturation: Be careful not to oversaturate an area with wet ink. If the area becomes over saturated with wetness, it will bleed outside the lines. If your paper is becoming too wet, you may want an area to dry or partially dry before adding another layer. Even after the ink dries, the area will bleed faster than a new piece of paper because some of the fibers in the paper are already used up. Use less layers of ink when using dark colors to prevent over saturation.
Correcting: To lighten an area where you have too much ink or if ink is in an unwanted area, be sure to correct SLOWLY! This means that you correct with your blender pen by pushing the color back to the area you want it (inside the lines). Be very gentle and use only a tiny bit of blender pen at a time. It is important to let the blender pen solution dry before trying to clean your mess again. If you use too much blender solution, the color inside the lines will wick right outside the lines and make a bigger mess than you had to start with. The dark ink seems to stain the paper and won't always clean up. You may want to consider cutting out your image and glueing it onto your project, or adding a shadow or outline around the image to "hide" the mistake. Remember that the Blender pen is not a "eraser" it just moves the ink around. Too much fluid will make it run be uncontrollable.
